Well, I guess that's it. This turned into an unexpected 4 year timeline of all things great. Sadaf and I are brainstorming new projects and ways of coexisting together from opposite coasts.

The end of something usually indicates the start of something, I've been transitioning it into something different (but very similar) here. Also, here is my official website. Sadaf is working on something as well, details on that to come.

Feel free to search through the archives, they stand strong like beautiful gravestones. Thanks for visiting, reading, responding, and we'll most likely be running into you on the streets. Life goes on, and on and on.

Every time I return back to New York from visiting my folks in Orange County, I bring home massive amounts of bread cut in squares carefully packed into zip lock bags. I put these bags in the freezer as soon as I get home to preserve freshness and, typically, it takes about 1.5 weeks until the stash has disappeared. This is no ordinary bread, this is Sangak Bread. It's hands down the tastiest bread that exists.

I've been kicking myself in the ass for not doing this story, but I could not have done it any better, it's perfect. From the pages of Bidoun:

In the 1920s, there was a custom in the UK to say the word 'rabbit' three times when going to bed on the last day of the month. The superstition did not end there: on rising, the person was to say 'hare' three times. However, sources differ on this point, with one saying that the words 'rabbit,rabbit, rabbit', and not 'hare' should be said on the morning of the month's first day.

It's so easy to leave the city and breathe some fresh air, it should be required by law. Last week we took a sweet day trip to Cold Springs to hike a 4.5 mile trail and came home revived and clear headed. The mountains are close people, all you gotta do is break out of the bubble and travel an hour north. Small towns have the best vibes (unless you have to live in them forever).

There are a million great things that will happen at SXSW this week in Texas, that's just how it goes. Although I won't be there to make the annual, "there's no time to brush your hair in texas" report, I will say you are a fool if you miss The Yellow Dogs at the Wave on the 17th (tomorrow). They're a band from Tehran that blew my mind last week at the Delancey, their third show and first time ever in the States. Imagine if Q and Not U, Can, Rye Coalition, and the Strokes had this amazing baby. I KNOW, mind blown, catch them. Here's more on them if your curiousity has peaked.

Our bros do this really awesome thing, it's a band, and it's called Workout. I've never been able to sum it up, but someone from Viva Radio recently did and it's right on the money. "Tedward" writes:

The name Workout has a familiar sporty theme to another band I once worked with called Men's Tennis, but who can argue with these animalistic "weird vibing, nipple licking party gods." Sporty is in! Rock climbing is cool. Susan Sarandon opened up a Ping Pong bar in Manhattan and I just recently bought a Nordic Track. Let's juice sometime. I love working out! If you're looking for a little Winter Boost this song will take you on a road trip with a slight nod to the Boss on the Jersey Shore. Which reminds me, have Workout played in New Jersey yet? If not please take me to Neptune City this coming weekend! If anything the song will inspire you to head to your local karaoke bar and slam a couple Jaegarbombs and storm the stage at the next Workout concert. Meet Matthew Schnipper. I don't see him as often as I used to since he left the neighborhood to live a better life in Fort Greene a couple months ago, but, man, do I love this dude. This is him on Orthrelem:

I have in the past said that I wish that music did not exist. I don’t wish that. I wish talking didn’t exist. Barring that, I wish that I could make it so that when people said things I didn’t like, I could laser beam Orthrelm into their mouths and they would jar their jaws to say things and only their songs would come out and they’d stand there agape like silly fish not knowing if they were catching or emitting such basic precision, but either way too awed to clam up and make it stop.

Four years ago while I was visiting NY I slept on his couch in the apartment he shared with Justin Kay, I remember waking up to the smell of his scent as he was getting ready to go on a job interview and I turned over to tell him he smelled great and turned right back around to sleep. I'm very pleased we became better friends once I moved here two years ago. He is a complicated human, equally thoughtful and salty. Read more things from him here.

A month or so ago I was introduced to 2 epic books filled with drawings from french artists petra mrkyz + jean-françois. These books are impossible to find online or anywhere else, maybe if you're in France you'll get lucky but for the most part the only copy I'm aware of lives in the living room of Andy (who does this thing among other things) & Dave (who is all about siking your mind). Lots to keep you entertained for hours and if you're in the mood for getting a new tattoo, it'll give you more ideas than you'll know what to do with. Here are just a few:

We started this blog 3 years ago to have a forum for people with the same sentiments and appreciations and to shed light on Iranian Americans similar to Sadaf and I, not yet first generation-ers who grew up on punk rock and sabzi polo (a traditional Iranian dish). We never really gave into the pressures of doing what we were expected to do as far as careers go (which constantly fucks with us) and we're always in search for people like us to validate our decisions into an adulthood where we still feel like we're getting away with something, if only by a thin thread (read here for a similar post). It's an issue that will forever haunt us.

This is where it feels good... last week I saw the screening for the movie below. I don't think many people understand how incredibly lucky we are to be able to do what we want to do, because in some places, you just don't have that right. It put me in a really dark mood which will hopefully be channeled into productive and worthwhile ventures. Big ups to Bahman Ghobai for giving this small community in Iran a face.

Things almost feel back to normal after the last couple weeks. FW always tears this city to shreds and we mostly welcome it with open arms and (sort of) cautious livers. Here's a little visual recap, it already feels like months ago. The Jacques party at the strip club on Valentine's Day was one of the best nights ever but I'll keep that censored in my archives for the most part, it was pretty raw.

Other highlights off the top of my head include (but are not limited to):

- glitter appliances at the band of outsiders presentation
- surf lodge top chef sam serving us fish tacos
- oc party at ace being absurdly enjoyable
- patti smith appearing at milk for lna party
- grace coddington in the flesh
- seeing manjari's ta-ta's at the strip club and watching everyone lose their minds in general
- suno's print mixing
- betsey johnson's insane runway show with hay, puppies, oversized heart balloons, carwheels, guns & extreme energy

The other day I experienced one of those subway rides where you find yourself flirting with a stranger without talking. This time, however, it was way more awesome. We rode the same train, got off at the same 2 transfers & sat across from each other the entire time, not necessarily meaning to, but coincidentally happening to. I stood up at my last stop, so did he, we walked out of different doors from the same cart, I was laughing to myself at the absurdity the whole time, scurried ahead of him and walked up the stairs. He tugged at the bottom of my coat and gave me his card and with a huge smile on my face, I looked down and rushed onward avoiding looking back. It was exhilarating. He was tall and a pianist (according to what it said on his card).

I contemplated first uncovering him through google then damned myself for even the thought of ruining the fun. It would only taint the magic and the art of it all. It would be nice if we didn't live in a culture of clutter, we still wrote love letters, and we tried to get acquainted free from the internet. In reality I'll never call him, but thats not the point. Men - get more train confident, the ladies love it (unless you are terrifying them which you should be able to sense), you got nothing to lose.

With one momentus birthday after another this last month, theres been no time for breathers. And aside from all the birthdays, we've made a good effort to go to weird Jamaican restaurants off the beaten path, every gallery in chelsea, attend lectures, cook lots of red meat, visit the dream house, be a part of history in a tiny basement where Acrassicauda played their first show in the USA, tackle new projects, and much more. If the rest of the year is just as action packed, I'll take the entire year of 2011 off.

Meet Erin Green. Because she shares the same birthday as my father, there was no question in my mind that she was gonna be locked into our cosmic crew for life. February 4th babies just have that kind of swagger about them, absolutely wild but incredibly put together. If you ask me, I think her resilience fuels her. I've watched her knit a whole wardrobe/apt, cook vagina cakes & shepherd's pies, I've shared wine & dance moves with her mother, seen her pee in public and observed her as the best dog lover & life live-er on the planet. It's a good general vibe to spread around, take note.

The great thing about NYC is that, any night of the week, no matter what, there is probably something pretty interesting/outright ridiculous happening. There's no moment of silence, and quite perfectly, you get to decide whether you want to take it easy or take it to the next level. For the second weeknight in the last two weeks, a party bus picked us up, ruled our minds with neon lights, beers and good tunes, and took us for a sweet ride over the bridge and down to the Rusty Knot. Dangerous because we can all get really used to this.

Austrailian photographer Narelle Autio captures scenes that make you want to plunge into streams of endless lush waters. She takes a seemingly common activity and makes it appear powerful and divine. It's been raining for a week straight in Los Angeles, my counterpart is in New York in the dead of winter, and these photos make you anticipate the most enjoyable season of the year. Inhibitions are lost, clothes are optional, and you spend most of your time doing something that feels natural and liberating. Oh to be swimming.

The other week we went to visit our friend Mac Glovinsky who works at UNICEF. We got a pretty killer tour of the UN and the next time I visit, he agreed to let me sit in Ahmajinedad's chair in the General Assembly Hall for a quick snapshot while I flash the camera a shaka sign, I assume when no one is looking.

It made me remember and revisit Platon's portraits from the UN meeting back in September. Take a look here, you can also listen to him tell you a little about how weird/cool/scary taking each persons photograph was. Libya's Quaddafi is definitely my current obsession.

Winter Solstice

Most everybody I know had a pretty rough year - it was filled with revelations, soul searching, important people passing and falling, serious life trauma, breakups, all things to grow hair on your chest, confuse you, and remind you what's important. It was perhaps a more complicated one than usual. But then again, isn't every year like that? YAWN. Everything is still up to you, your whole life, what you want, how you get it, how you feel and how you make other people feel. The best way of keeping your eye on the prize, whatever that translates to, is by not being a dick. Communicate, exchange smiles, and appreciate every minute. Moving forward - lets have the best time we've ever had in our lives right now, lets work hard, and lets treat eachother well. Timeless mantra.

Here's to our new years eve that started out with bottles of champagne in our apartment, moved to a warehouse in Brooklyn where we kissed all our friends, then to the greatest 14 person limo ride into Manhattan. The rest is a beautiful mush of high energy dancing, close calls, losing rolls of film/other personal belongings, and feeling pretty good. Pizza recuperation the next day, 3 years in a row now.

Coincidence Part XVIII

As we embark on the month of "sober january," a term 7 of us have created to get more into our crafts and new skills/hobbies, we came upon a discussion about the 70s. One member of our group needed an explanation as to why another member was so interested in the decade. Hally replied, "I guess my interest in the 70's began with music (Roxy Music, Queen, The Modern Lovers, etc.) but the book on 70's Style and Design is what specifically directed my attention to this decade. The pluralism of style (Deco revival, New Wave, Minimalism, Pop, etc.), the escapism, the flamboyant sexuality is all very fun. It's the decade of Post Modernism. It's just cool."

Great thing about living with friend/roommate Laura Kim, is she does not only come up with genius million dollar plans that I cannot disclose, but, also, since she works at the MOMA, she always brings home worthwhile books and presents. Coincidentally she brought home a book about 70s art & design. I hope these images go to prove Hally's point further.

Meet Saltanat Naseri.

After work, one night a week, around 6:30pm/7, I visit my grandmother, Saltanat (her name means monarchy). She is a proud woman, with such a descriptive vernacular, it's hard not to fall in love with her. She prepares me a plate of food consisting of the most perfect balance - homemade sour yogurt, tadiq (crispy basmati rice that forms at the bottom of the pot), khoresht (stew) & herbs. Then we drink tea and cover many topics of interest.

Sometimes she talks about how she spoke with so-and-so on the phone and offered that I marry so-and-so's son, and how they gladly accepted but if I didn't prefer their son, I should introduce other boys to my father that I may like because she's already talked to him about it and all she wants is to attend my wedding before she lays her eyes to rest for good. I just smile, nod my head and tell her she knows best and, "sure, sure, that sounds good." The subject changes, we gossip about the family, I make her laugh and we sip some more tea.

The entire time, Jeopardy is on t.v. directly in front of us and she tells me I should try out for it, even if I don't think I could win (she speaks and understands zero english, mind you).

It is my favorite and most anticipated night of the week.

Going to California for the holidays is in no way a relaxing experience. While this great state should be looked forward to as the most epic vacation/living spot, with mountains, deserts, beaches and perfect weather, it has become one of my biggest fears.

Persian families, if you've ever know any, are level 10 in terms of family intensity. That means if you live 2000 miles away and you are in the same state as them and they know this information, they take you hostage. The idea of visiting beloved friends in Los Angeles, taking a trip down Sunset by where you used to live, or getting beef pickle tacos at that one spot you liked a lot, any and all of those ideas, out the window. It's terribly heartbreaking. And on top of it (god bless them because they are my favorite people in the whole world and they deserve everything they have because they worked hard for it), you have to ride in an orange hummer while they blast urban persian music. Pause.

But there is always the good side too. The consistency of certain things that makes me feel like I'm still 10yrs old sitting in my grandma's house in Westwood looking at the several items that are always on her table including a bowl of mandarin oranges & cucumbers, nuts and toot (a strange Iranian candy thats usually eaten while drinking tea), knowing that my mom's superior cooking skills will teach me something new (this time is was de-seeding a pomegranate by dunking it underwater), taking a 5 minute drive to the beach to pick up seashells and have a mini hike, or watching my parents while thinking to myself that this might be the first time I've ever seen them in love. I really do owe them everything, they are hands down the greatest people on the planet.

But for the next trip, I'll be keeping it my little secret (between me and the bros) so that I can get time in with my Los Angeles family- there's nothing about them that ever causes me anxiety. It's a serious felony in the world of persian etiquette, but I denounce it as no fault of mine because I was born equally between two cultures. Just, shhhhh, don't tell the Shokrae's.

Meet Jeremiah Mandel. Being in love is a strange and wonderful thing. Jeremiah has an endless and unconditional capacity to love, like, full heartedly and selflessly. It's one of his admirable qualities. This last year we taught each other a number of things, mostly as a result of our dueling perspectives. It's nice to step out of your bubble once in a while.

It's also nice to remember that it's only as complicated as you want it to be, most of the time it's just about acceptance and understanding. In friendship, love remains.

In fact, here are the drawings I mentioned in that last post. Fail proof game for fun.

Rules - You have to keep your eyes on the person you're drawing the entire time, you're not allowed to look anywhere else and you're not allowed to lift the pen off the paper until the drawing is done (but if you lift a couple times it's okay because its hard to draw the eyes and the mouth unless you lift the pen). Marijuana is recommended to help concentration and technique.

There was this weird night in Silverlake a couple years ago where we ended up at some directors mid century modern mansion in the hills and we stayed up drawing pictures of each other without ever looking at the paper or lifting our pens (until the drawings were done), it was one of those nights where the sun came up and we had no idea it was ever that late. This director fellow at some point asked me what I did and after I told him documentary photography, he grabbed this book out of his impressive book collection and we looked at it together. Still one of the most interesting books I've looked through. Access is everything.

I recently ordered it for Samuel Macon's 30th birthday present and finally ordered a copy for myself. It's called An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar by photographer Taryn Smith, recommended for everyone.

Fresh Start

South Beach Miami is my new bizarro California vacation spot. It's the beach without the obligations of visiting home. The ocean is clear and tinted seafoam green, the skies are shades of pastels, and the food is dangerously delicious, always in huge portions. For a first timer at Art Basel, I felt right at home. But seriously, we got enough art in New York, I just needed an excuse to pop my Florida cherry and bask in its sun.

Highlights included:

- moped cruising

- first night black out

- mega arting out

- talks of the devils dandruff up the butt

- Versailles, Tap Tap, Big Pink & El Rey De Las Fritas

- run ins and new faces

So ready for round 2.

At Art Basel this year, I made a new friend named Pizza, by far my favorite new friend in forever. Along with numerous other brilliant tattoos, this man has jacuzzi tattooed on his knuckles with a little champagne flute on his pinky. That's really just the beginning. Also, I discovered stuff he makes, it's all really fun to look at. More here.

My little Ly baby brought me a cabbage flower for my birthday during dim sum brunch and I'm trying my hardest to dry that sucker so I can keep it forever. Like a lightening bug, she is in and out, unassuming and magical.

I don't know what's gotten into all our friends on the west coast, but jesus christ, everyone is getting married. Maybe it's just that age or maybe it's just that our friends in NY are way too self involved to think of marraige, either way, here's to, like, the 4th wedding of 2009 in Cali.

Stacey & Devin's wedding a couple weeks ago was super special. Stacey is an original member of the deep girl gang formulated years ago out of lady camaraderie & carefree intentions where we used to tear up dance floors all over LA, dripping with sweat, and walk into work the next day at Fred Segal, put on our professional game face, and wait to repeat the glory that was single life for most of us. Devin has always been an epic bro, from the beginning. So it's no surprise they fell in love, got a bulldog, and made a beautiful ceremony out of Stacey's parents backyard. Of course we didn't let her go without a Palm Springs trip to a mid century modern pool house where we had a 2 night slumber party with homemade absinth. Clearly.

Meet Adam Loeb. He is a midwest born, college educated know-it-all that can always teach you something new about world politics and/or jews. Early on, during the elections, he was down with Hilary just for arguments sake.

We shared a home in LA for about a year and every time we'd leave the house I'd have to ask Adam if he had his a) keys, b) wallet and c) phone - it took an extra 10 minutes to leave the house that year on every occasion. Recently he spent a lot a time traveling from Norway to Rwanda to whatever uncharted territory exists to track down war criminals and he still managed to call his girlfriend Annie often. Now I think thats pretty remarkable.
